I am a Lao student who now undertaking a research on shifting cultivation in Laos. Presently I am studying at the devision of Geography, the University of Sydney, Australia.

The objective of my research is:
1. To understand the context of the shifting cultivators (socio-economic, political, cultural, and ecological) and how their context affect to adopt recommended practices.
2. To understand what motivateshifting cultivators to (a) follow their own practice, (b) adopt recommended practices and (c)reject or modify recommended practices.
3. To explore ways can be done to improve present practices of shifting cultivators in Laos.

In order to achieve this objective, the research question needed to be answered are:

1. What is the context of shifting cultivators in Laos
2. What are the main factors that influences shifting cultivators in adoption of new agricultural practices
3. How are the shifting cultivator coping with their environmental (population growth, labour, capital, market and traditional)
4. What is the view of stakeholders can be don to improve the situation
5. What is my views of position with regard to adoption of new agricultural practice by shifting cultivators.

Human ecology and anthopology are used as approach to find the answere for these questions. The study villages are carried out in the three villages in the northern part of Laos where most of shifting cultivators have been living from generation to generation.

Presently, the research study is undertanking and hopefully by the end of this year the out come of this research will be presented.
